American Colonial silver sugar tongs with intricate open work handles having feather edges and shell bowls made by Edmund Milne of Philadelphia c.1760. Monogrammed "MF" in period block script, these desirable tongs are in excellent original condition, with no repairs, removals or alterations. Milne was an Irish American silversmith of great reputation. He made a set of 12 cups for George Washington in August 1777. A bit of info from Beatrice Garvin, the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s curator of American decorative arts: " Philadelphia is very Irish in its 18th-century silver, which has smooth bellies and very limited use of applied ornament,′′ Mrs. Garvan said. She explained that Philadelphia′s most important silversmiths included several Irish craftsmen - Syng, William Hollingshead and Edmund Milne. ′′That′s where the wealth was and they became highly successful merchants." French sterling silver traveling coach set, complete, c.1815. The set was the property of the Countess C. de Fribert of Austria. The leather covered hinged lidded round box has an Austrian Beaker with a fitted felt lined sectioned container for the two spoons, fork, knife and double compartment spice box. The Austrian beaker is heavily gold lined and has a gold lip. The base has am 1815 Vienna Town Mark, an advanced payment against duty mark, a general assay mark for Vienna, and a maker′s mark of a conjoined HC. All the pieces have the Countess′ crowned monogram: EEF and the top of the box is monogrammed, in gilt letters: Cse. de Fribert. The spoons and forks were made by Charles Salomon Mahler and the knife handle has the maker;s mark: V•C. The carbon steel knife blade in clean, with no pitting or rust and is marked: Salmon. The double compartment, gilt lined spice box is unmarked but guaranteed to be solid silver. Each piece fits perfectly to align properly when assembled. The hinged lidded, fitted leather and felt lined case is in remarkable condition. Monogrammed as described above, the soft, warm, original finish is present, with no buffing or machine polishing.
