American Colonial silver sugar tongs with intricate open work handles having feather edges and shell bowls made by Edmund Milne of Philadelphia c.1760. Monogrammed "MF" in period block script, these desirable tongs are in excellent original condition, with no repairs, removals or alterations. Milne was an Irish American silversmith of great reputation. He made a set of 12 cups for George Washington in August 1777. A bit of info from Beatrice Garvin, the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s curator of American decorative arts: " Philadelphia is very Irish in its 18th-century silver, which has smooth bellies and very limited use of applied ornament,′′ Mrs. Garvan said. She explained that Philadelphia′s most important silversmiths included several Irish craftsmen - Syng, William Hollingshead and Edmund Milne. ′′That′s where the wealth was and they became highly successful merchants."
