American sterling silver pedestal based centerpiece bowl by Johann Rudolph Wendt made for Ball Black and Company, both of New York City, c.1860. This wonderful figural centerpiece bowl has a nicely detailed, cast squirrel on top of each reverse C scroll split handle and applied and cast scroll and Wild Rose bowl edges, with one side of the bowl having an ornate, period monogram: W. The large oval bowl sits on a conforming pedestal base, with the maker′s and retailer′s marks being on the bottom of the bowl inside the pedestal. Ball Black and Company were the leading New York Retailers of their day and Wendt had his factory on the floors above the Ball Black showrooms. This special centerpiece weighs 948 grams or 30.5 ozs. Troy and is 16 1/2 : across the handles, 12 1/2" bowl length, 7" bowl width, 7" tall to the top of each squirrel, and 4 3.4" tall to the bowl edge.
