American Colonial coin silver lidded tankard by the esteemed and renown silversmith Richard Van Dyck of New York, c.1740-1750. This magnificent tankard features a slightly tapered straight sided body with a mildly flared threaded base and upper rim. The hinged lid features an inset 1707 Queen Anne coin surrounded by an engraved border featuring scroll work, laurels, and flowers. The outer rim of the tankard features a cut scroll form accent with minor engraved decorations. The attached Onslow thumb piece adds to the appeal of this special tankard. The large handle features an applied cornucopia of fruit with a dangling bunch of grapes. The bottom of the handle features a ram′s head accent. Monogrammed MIT in ornate block script. Marked with Van Dyck′s makers mark on the body on each side of the handle. This stunning tankard measures 8 3/4" across the handle, 5 3/4" wide, 7 9/16" tall, and weighs 40.6 ozt. Marked with Adrian Bancker′s makers mark on both sides of the handle. There is a slight dent in the handle. Likely the rarest item we have offered to date, this superb example of San Francisco silver design innovation speaks for itself. The details are given in the text in the photos. Useful even to this day, the mill rests on three Walrus Ivory feet, looking like a spaceship ready to take off. The mill is inverted for use, thus avoiding waste and spillage when put to rest. The chance to own such an important piece of San Francisco history comes along infrequently.
