Repousse Coin Silver Teapot and Stand Unicorn Crest 1840

.Repousse Coin Silver Teapot and Stand Unicorn Crest 1840

code: wb610

American coin silver teapot and matching stand in the Repousse pattern. The pot is made and marked by Samuel Kirk and Son. The stand or tray is made and marked by Andrew Ellicott Warner and over stamped by Kirk, likely the result of Kirk’s need for the stand to accommodate his customer. Possibly, the person who presented the stand needed it on short notice and was a customer of Kirk’s and Kirk went to Warner to obtain the stand. This serves to well illustrate how interchangeable the Baltimore Repousse silver was and calls into question the common idiosyncrasy of some who insist on only having Kirk or Stieff, etc. Both pieces bear the same skillfully engraved family crest of a rampant Unicorn. The stand has the inscription on the bottom: "From Mrs.Whitridge to N. G. Thomas". The pot has allover Repousse floral decorations, sits on a circular, spread foot repousse base and has repousse handle with ivory insulators. The stand has a Repousse border and the Crest is located in the middle of a hand engraved field, surrounded by foliate engraving and sits on four ball and claw feet.
