French Provincial, Lyon, 950 standard silver covered sugar, jam or sweet meat bowl, 1813 - 1830, maker′s mark: FC over S for François Cécil Soccard. It also has an unknown to us Stag Head mark, very similar to the discharge mark used in Nantes during the mid 18th C. This most unusual oval pedestal serving bowl has the usual array of marks on the lid, body and base, plus the unusual aforementioned Stag head mark and another unknown script mark on the inner rim of the lid: EST. The mark is next to a Lyon Grosse Garantie mark. The body has a 1st Standard Provincial assay mark, with another Provincial Garantie mark on the cut work of the base along with yet another unknown mark of a square cross with intersecting rays. The lid and underside of the base have buriladas or vous ciselé marks taken by the assayer. The makers′ mark is struck under the base, inside the bowl and on the underside of the lid. The handles are in the forms of winged, footed serpents and the oval body has drapery on the rim and on a central band. The base has a cut work riser and conforming drapery on the lower rim, sitting on four ball feet. The lid has a domed leaf form handle. Weighing 449 grams or 14.4 ozs. Troy, this especially attractive and desirable bowl is 8 3/8" across the handles, 7 3/8" tall, 5 3/4" long, 4 3/8" wide and 3 1/2" deep. American sterling silver open salt dishes and pepper shakers, 4 sets, in a spectacular, over-the-top Renaissance Revival style pattern by Gorham Silversmiths, special order marks 8586 and 8587, c.1900 and were retailed by Theodore B. Starr of New York City. These oval open salts have 4 lion masks on the body and scrolling rims. The bodies have ball and bracket borders under the rims and Repousse floral and scroll decorations with panels of square ended lined spatulate decorations on the under bodies, separated by rising foliate panels. The conforming pedestal bases have scroll and foliate decorations and rest on Acanthus leaf and scroll feet. The pepper shakers have decorations conforming with the salts and flower urns on their bodies and conforming round pedestal bases. The lids have pierced dome tops with urn finials and wide scroll skirts. Each open salt is 3 1/4" long, 2 7/8" wide, 2" tall and the four weigh 500 grams. Each pepper shaker is 5 3/4" tall, 2 3/4" in diameter and the four weigh a total of 647 grams. Total silver weight is 1147 grams or 36.9 ozs. Troy. Each piece has two scroll bordered reserves, one blank and one containing an ornate period script monogram: N. German 800 standard parcel gilt silver oval serving bowl stands with the best wheel and brilliant cut glass inserts by Wilhelm Binder of Schwabisch Gmund, Germany, c.1890. We are offering a pair of these fabulous bowls, perhaps the nicest ones of this size that we have ever seen. Each insert has wheel cut Belleflower and Acanthus leaf decorations under the brilliant cut scalloped rim and a waisted cut center band that forms the mount for the silver stand. The bottoms are star and panel cut, with both inserts being in excellent condition. The gilt silver stands have conforming Belleflower and Acanthus leaf decorations on a central band, fancy scroll and pearl handles with gilt accents, a beaded top rim on an inverted matte finished silver upper body. The tops of the rims and the bands separating the decorations are gilt. The lower portion of the body has a silver matte finish and sits on four Acanthus and scroll feet, with the entire interior of each having a matte gilt finish. Each has the German marks for 800 standard silver, the maker′s mark of Wilhelm Binder and a French Import mark. Each of these fabulous bowls is 8" across the handles and 5" wide. The large insert bowl has wheel cut cameo geometric and Belleflower foliate decorations under the shaped scalloped rim and a star cut bottom. The gilt accent silver stand has a wide band of floral and foliate scroll Repousse decorations with beaded borders, fancy Caryatid scroll and cameo handles with gilt accents. There are two centrally located applied panels with blank cameo cartouches flanked by dragons and topped with scroll and shell finials. English silverplate on brass hot water jug in a fabulously ornate, Renaissance Revival design featuring a dozen different masks on column separated panels and surrounded by animal, floral and foliate decorations. Two large masks are on either side of the neck and one one the hinged lid. The ornate Caryatid handle with its ivory insulators adds the finishing touch to this special and very usable jug. The flat base of the jug is gilt ans is 3 3/4" in diameter, with the jug being 8 3/8" tall and 7" handle to spout. French 950 sterling silver and cut crystal Drageoir (a box for sweets) or Confiturier (Jam container) by Etienne-Auguste Courtois, 62 Rue du Temple, Paris, now in the Marais District. Courtois, a Master Silversmith, who specialized in Partie de Table or important pieces for table decoration, worked from 1834 - 1848, and, as the fineness mark is that used from 1819 - 1838, the piece can be dated 1834 - 1838. The fineness mark, guarantee mark and maker′s mark are on the body and the lid. Even the retaining nut for the lid handle is original. The body of the Drageoir is supported by four panels of winged shell, scroll and acanthus leaf designs, showing off the insert to good effect. The square base has a Gadroon and shell border and sits on four stylized shell caped ball feet, supporting a round, collared pedestal embossed with spear and dart decorations. The lid, which fits the crystal insert properly, has a shell supported ball handle mounted atop a n embossed, alternating leaf and floral cap. The cut crystal insert has lobed panel decorations, the slightest hint of blue color and is free of any chips, flakes or cracks. The fancy scroll and shell add the finishing touches to this spectacular serving bowl. The silver weight is 369 grams or 11.9 ozs, with the crystal insert weighing 303 grams.
