American copper and applied sterling silver square Aesthetic Japanesque tray by Gorham Silversmiths, date marked for 1883.
This most unusual 10" square tray has an applied, flat chased silver scene of three Japanese men playing a board game while another man, pretending to be reading a book, looks on. There is also an applied silver rat crawling towards the gamesmen.
In the upper right corner of the tray are two inserted high relief, oval silver medallions of roosters and doves in floral settings with butterflies and spiders.
The ground of the tray is engraved with a board floor under the game table and a grass foreground and mountain scenery and birds in the background.
The upper left corner of the tray is monogrammed in ornate, Japanesque script: CGH.
This special tray is 10" square and weighs 962 grams and has a very nice old medium brown patina that is even overall.
The tray is 5/8" deep and has crimped corners.
Monogrammed as described above, the soft, warm, original finish is present, with no buffing or machine polishing.
The excellent original condition and clear detail, with no removals, repairs or alterations, make this an especially attractive offering.
