Elegant classically styled French silver Taste Vin, c.1850. The vessel is used by Sommeliers and cellar masters to examine wine for quality. The tastevin is shaped in the traditional manner, with a convex bottom, the shallow curving sides dotted with large and small indentations on half of the body, with the other half having curved lobes. The shape, combined with the sheen of the silver, allows the color of the wine to be fully appreciated in dark environments like a cellar or a candlelit room. The curved sides help concentrate the aroma, so only a very small amount of wine has to be poured from the bottle to judge quality. The looped handle allows the tastevin to be worn suspended from a chain. Taste Vins with round thumb pieces are generally from the Paris region. The handle and body are marked appropriately with French 1st standard marks (950/1000 pure silver), with the owners′ initials PD and TL being engraved on the thumbpiece. This desirable tastevin is 2 1/2" in diameter, 3 3/8" across the handle, 3/4" deep and weighs 35 grams. Monogrammed as described above, the soft, warm, original finish is present, with no buffing or machine polishing. The excellent original condition and clear detail, with no removals, repairs or alterations, make this an especially attractive offering.
