.Potpourri Urn Goodnow Jenks Boston 1895 Sterling Silver

code: wb2060

American sterling silver Potpourrri Urn by Goodnow & Jenks of Boston, c.1895. What is one of the more unusual items that we have had in a long time, this striking Sheraton style urn has Acanthus leaf thumbpieces on its reverse, double C scroll handles. The pierced lid has a pierced, beaded edge dome with a swirling flame finial, with the inner gilt lid having a matching finial. Potpouri is placed inside the gilt interior of the urn, and when the scent is desired, the inner lid is removed. The urn could also be used as a small flower vase, with the pierced lid serving as a frog. The body of the urn has Sheraton style foliate swags and cartouches, with an ornate period monogram RTH. The body sits on a spread foot, circular pedestal base. The urn would even serve well as a small trophy. Weighing 326 grams or 10.5 ozs. Troy, the urn is 8" tall, 5 3/4" across the handles and 3 1/4" in diameter. Goodnow & Jenks was the premier silversmith in Boston at the turn of the nineteenth century. This is a fine example of their extraordinary work.
