American coin silver cup and saucer by Koehler and Ritter of San Francisco, c.1870, with their early Castle mark. Both cup and saucer have a wonderfully clean matte finish and engraved grapevine borders. The saucer has a circle of outwardly projecting spear point engravings emanating from its well. The top of the saucer is lightly gilt. The cup as an arched C handle with a cast acanthus leaf and large Rosette lower socket and a gilt interior. Weighing a total of 280 grams or 9 ozs. Troy, the cup is 3 1/8" in diameter at the rim, 1 1/2" in diameter at the base, 3" tall and 4 1/4" across the handle. The front of the cup has an ornate, period script monogram: SE. Monogrammed as described above, the soft, warm, original finish is present, with no buffing or machine polishing. The excellent original condition and clear detail, with no removals, repairs or alterations, make this an especially attractive offering.
