American coin silver Civil War presentation snuff box, c.1865.
This piece of Civil War history has allover engine turned and engraved designs, with a central New Year′s Day, 1865 presentation inscription on the lid:

The PMGO was the Provost Marshall′s General Office and was established by the War Department by an act of March 3, 1863 (12 Stat. 731). Functions: Arrested deserters, enrolled men for the draft, enlisted volunteers, and compiled statistics on the physical condition of recruits and on army casualties.
This desirable snuff box is 3 1/8" wide, 2 1/8" tall, 3/4" deep and weighs 67 grams or 2.2 ozs. Troy. The box is unmarked and guaranteed to be as represented.
Inscribed as described above, the excellent original condition and clear, crisp detail, with no removals, repairs or alterations, make this an especially attractive offering.
The soft, warm, original antique finish is present, with no buffing or machine polishing.
