American sterling silver centerpiece bowl by Wood and Hughes Silversmiths of New York City, c.1880.
This large attractive bowl has an applied floral die rolled rim and it sits on a large pedestal foot with a crescent die rolled rim.
The bowl rim has a partial maker′s mark, which appears to be either an E or an F and a K with a device, possibly a leopard′s head, in between.
We do not recall ever seeing a maker′s mark on an applied part on American silver. It is common on English silver.
This spectacular bowl is 8 3/4" in diameter for the bowl, 5 1/2" in diamete3r for the base, 7 5/8" tall and weighs 612 grams or 19.6 ozs. Troy.
The bowl has an ornate, period monogram: EH.
Monogrammed as described above, the soft, warm, original finish is present, with no buffing or machine polishing.
The excellent original condition and clear detail, with no removals, repairs or alterations, make this an especially attractive offering.
