Repousse Coin Silver Teapot and Stand Unicorn Crest 1840

.Repousse Coin Silver Teapot and Stand Unicorn Crest 1840

code: wb610

American coin silver teapot and matching stand in the Repousse pattern. The pot is made and marked by Samuel Kirk and Son. The stand or tray is made and marked by Andrew Ellicott Warner and over stamped by Kirk, likely the result of Kirk’s need for the stand to accommodate his customer. Possibly, the person who presented the stand needed it on short notice and was a customer of Kirk’s and Kirk went to Warner to obtain the stand. This serves to well illustrate how interchangeable the Baltimore Repousse silver was and calls into question the common idiosyncrasy of some who insist on only having Kirk or Stieff, etc. Both pieces bear the same skillfully engraved family crest of a rampant Unicorn. The stand has the inscription on the bottom: "From Mrs.Whitridge to N. G. Thomas". The pot has allover Repousse floral decorations, sits on a circular, spread foot repousse base and has repousse handle with ivory insulators. The stand has a Repousse border and the Crest is located in the middle of a hand engraved field, surrounded by foliate engraving and sits on four ball and claw feet. Dimensions: Footed Salver: Diameter: 7 1/8" Height 1" Weight 6.3 ozs Troy, Teapot: Length from Spout to Handle 9" Height 5" Weight 13.5 ozs Troy Makers and Marks: Samuel Kirk and Son, Baltimore Maryland, c.1870 Andrew Ellicott Warner, Baltimore Maryland, c.1870 Teapot: S. Falick Novick Arts and Crafts Serving Bowl 1935

. Falick Novick Arts and Crafts Serving Bowl 1935

code: SHBL020

American sterling silver, hand made, hand hammered Arts and Crafts large serving bowl made by Falick Novick of Chicago, Illinois, c.1930, having a double fluted design which divides the bowl into four panels, one of which as an applied Arts and Crafts style monogram “EZT”. When the central letter of a three letter monogram is larger, as in this example, it usually indicates the last name. The bowl is in excellent original condition, with a wonderful finish and no repairs or alterations. Novick is an extremely desirable Chicago Silversmith whose work seldom comes on the market. The best book on Chicago silver is Sharon S. Darling′s Chicago Silversmiths, published in 1977 as a catalog of an exhibition by the Chicago Historical Society. Darling mentions dozens of silversmiths who worked in Chicago, but several stand out. One is Falick Novick, who came to America from Russia in 1893 at the age of 15, and was initially employed as a plumber′s assistant. In 1907, he moved to Chicago to work as a silversmith, but struggled for years. Novick produced copper bowls for the Kalo Shop until 1920, when it stopped selling copper items, and started making the heavy silver items for which he is best known. He eventually prospered and sold his work through retail outlets such as Macy′s until he died in 1957. Novick′s mark was usually STERLING / HANDWROUGHT / BY / F. NOVICK / CHICAGO, although the city was sometimes omitted. His work, and that of Heinrich Eicher, is on a par with Kalo. Dimensions: weight 13.6 ozs. Troy, diameter 9”, depth 2” Maker, Falick Novick, Chicago Illinois, c.1930. Sterling; Handwrought F. NOVICK
